Improvisation in greek traditional dance, as a performative, embodied and intercultural phenomenon
Abstract
The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is the experiential and theoretical investigation of improvisation in educational practice as well as the artistic stage presentation of Greek traditional dance in modern urbanized environments. From the bibliographic review of anthropological and ethnographic research, it became apparent that improvisation is an essential element of creation in the “first” existence of Greek traditional dance, where it was an integral part of the operation and communication of people in a local community, but also in its “second” existence, where its morphology and function has been transformed through revivals and representations related to processes of folklorization. The undeniable continuity of the value of improvisation in traditional and modern socio-cultural practices of dance, is documented through the study of a collection of texts that provide evidence for a fuller understanding of the subject.
