This dissertation offers the first comprehensive account of monumental church painting in the Principality of Epirus, one of the Greek successor states that emerged from the wreckage of 1204. While a close examination of a huge corpus of pictorial ensembles stands at its core, the dissertation also considers a set of larger issues pertinent to the artistic and cultural orientation of the Byzantine world in the thirteenth and early fourteenth century, among them the issues of exile and memory, continuity and change, centre and periphery. The corpus of pictorial ensembles examined in this dissertation comprises thirty monuments. These monuments range from princely foundations sponsored by members of the ruling Komnenos-Doukas family to unassuming cave churches and village shrines build by local communities. In addition to scrutinizing this rich visual material and the related epigraphic and archaeological evidence, the dissertation explores an array of textual sources that shed further light on the artistic culture of Epirus. Central to my project is the consideration of the visual articulation of ideological responses to the Latin occupation of Constantinople and the experience of exile. The aspirations of the rulers of Epirus to the imperial succession against the rival claims of their opponents at Nicaea found an eloquent visual expression in the monumental pictorial programs created within their domain, for example at the church of Saint Demetrios Katsouris near Arta, at the Old Metropolis of Beroia, Saint Nicholas Rhodias near Arta, monastery of Blacherna etc. I argue that the Epirote court sought to model Arta, its capital, in the image of Constantinople. The nostalgia for the lost “queen of cities” informs not only the official rhetoric and iconography of rulership; it also animates sacred imagery. After the restoration of the Byzantine role on the Bosporus in 1261, the Epirote elites continued to promote their Constantinopolitan ascendancy, while simultaneously maintaining their distance from the new Palaiologan regime. Aside from the questions of politics, ideology, and the social contexts of art-making, my dissertation investigates the practice of monumental pictorial art and traces the movements of painters and workshops as well as the transmission of pictorial models and iconographic formulae. The visual material, couple with the relevant textual evidence, suggests that, despite its political fragmentation, the Byzantine world of the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries was in artistic terms remarkably well connected. Accompanying the dissertation is a detailed catalogue of monuments, which includes architectural plans and perspectival views showing the interior arrangement of iconographic units within each church, as well as transcriptions of all extant epigraphic texts, from dedicatory inscriptions to texts written on the scrolls held by holy figures
