The 16th century frescoes in the holy church of the Dormition of the Virgin in Kalampaka
Abstract
The religious frescoes of late-16thcentury western Thessaly have not heretoforebeen studied systematically. The evident postbyzantineboom in church construction, and thesubsequent development of monumental artare a result of the area’s religious tradition,driven by the monasteries of Meteora, whichwere a major center of Christianity, and of theprivileged taxation status bestowed upon theregion of Thessaly in the first half of the 16thcentury. The conditions formed in the finaldecades of the century are exceptionallyfavorable for the decoration of churches in ThessalyThe present dissertation presents the art of thepainters mentioned in the donor inscription,Neophytos (son of Theofanes Strelitzas-Bathas)and Kyriazes, through exhaustive study of thechurch’s wall decoration.
