Monumental reserves in Albania today: ecclesiastical architecture - art in the wider region of Gjirokastër

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to contribute to the following: a) filling the void which exists regarding systematic research in the area of Gjirokastër as far as issues of art and architecture of ecclesiastical monuments are concerned b) promoting the work of the Church in Albania concerning the conservation and preservation of its spiritual wealth which is an indispensable part of the universal inheritance of Christianity c) projecting the post byzantine art and architecture in Albania today d) studying and making known the collapsing Holy Monastery of Zonarion, contributing in this way to its preservation at least on an academic level; nobody knows whether the Church will manage to reconstruct it.The study consists of two parts. The first part starts with a brief retrospection and survey on the broader area of all of Epirus from early Christian years up to our days for the better understanding of the ecclesiastical situation in Albania.
