The Metropolitan of Mytilene Iakovos, from Durres: from Ethnarchist Church to the National one

Abstract

The Metropolitan of Mytilene Iakovos from Durres was born in Moshonisia of Asia Minor in 1878. After his graduation from the Theological School of Ηalki, Iakovos was appointed Grand Archdeacon in the Metropolis of Smyrna in 1903. In 1908 he was elected Bishop of Christoupoleos. The period he lived is characterized as a period of great changes, during which the dismantlement of big empires of Europe takes place. He is elected Metropolitan of Durres in 1911, just before the Balkan Wars in 1912-1913. It is a period when the demand for national homogeneity, national cohesion leads to the completeness of the creation of national states of Balkans and as a result to the fracture of ethnarchist Church to autocephalus national Churches. In 1925 he is elected Metropolitan of Mytilene, he remains there until his death in 1958.
