The iconography of the Mother of God in monumental paintings of Constantinople, Asia Minor, the Balkans and Cyprus during the Middle and Late Byzantine periods
Abstract
This thesis focuses on the iconography of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Constantinople, in Asia Minor, in the Balkans and in Cyprus during the Middle and Late Byzantine periods. The Dormition of the Mother of God featured prominently as the most important celebration dedicated to Virgin Mary in the Byzantine Empire. Indeed, a plethora of apocryphal, hagiological, homelitical and hymnographical texts referred to the event. The iconography of the Dormition of the Mother of God developed even further in the Empire in conjunction with two contributing factors: a) the gradually prevailing perception that Virgin Mary acts as Constaninople’s Protectress and b) the translation of the maphorion, the most important relic of the Dormition, to the capital during the 5th c.The main aim of this thesis is to thoroughly study the Dormition’s iconographic development not only during the Middle Byzantine period (843-1204) but also in ...
