Ottoman perceptions and considerations on the first ottoman-greek borderlands in Thessaly (1832-1865)
Abstract
The central hypothesis of the dissertation examines the impact of the Ottoman reforms on the borderlands between the Ottoman Empire and the Greek Kingdom. The Period examined extends from the time of the establishment of the Greek-Ottoman frontier to the aftermath of the reforms that followed the end of the Crimean War.The first chapter is titled “ Approaching the first Ottoman=Greek borderlands” locates the history of the first Greek-Ottoman frontier and the social groups that lived in the borderland during the period of Ottoman reforms in the context of the broader debate concerning the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire, adopting center-periphery analysis.The second chapter titled “Borders in Creation” examined the creation, the diplomacy and the topography of the frontier and presents the respective international agreements.
