Study of surface solar radiation with the use of satellite and ground-based observations and climate model simulations
Abstract
The ultimate aim of this thesis is to highlight the importance of the combined use of ground and satellite-based observations with climate model and radiative transfer simulations in surface solar radiation (SSR) studies. Chapter 1, where general information about solar radiation is given and the motivations of the thesis are discussed, is followed by a chapter presenting three short case studies. All these studies make use of satellite data from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) in order to highlight the importance of ISCCP for regional climate studies. In Chapter 3, following the discussion in the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on SSR and the observed dimming and brightening effect, a detailed assessment of the ability of a regional climate model (RegCM4) to simulate SSR over Europe is presented.
