Compounding and compounds in greek sign language
Abstract
The present thesis belongs to the field of morphology. The study objective includes the process of compound formation in the Greek Sign Language.Sign Languages have a rich morphology while their morphological structure is closely related to its syntactic function. The process of compound formation in Sign Languages which show high productivity in it and have been studied extensively (British SL, American SL, Swedish SL etc.) is a multifaceted and wide phenomenon, which often exceeds the limits of the particular process or even those of the morphological sector. What is being researched in this thesis is the existence of compounds in Greek SL that fulfill the criteria required to be defined as compound and consequently the elements that differentiate compound from simple Signs and phrases, the rules that define the changes that occur during the process, the relation and the order between the synthetic parts/Signs of the compounds.
