"New" topological architecture and the animation rhetoric, 1990-2010

Abstract

The term topology, an in essence mathematical term, has been actively introduced in architectural discourses since at least the beginnings of the 1990’s. Acoustically it resembles to the term typology, which, in its turn was also used in architecture, mainly in the 1960’s. This coherence, between topology and typology is remarkable, as topology is counter-suggesting on themes suggested by typology: topology presents itself as the advent of a new paradigm for architecture that will replace typology. Typology as a concept, derives from biological sciences. In contrast, topology is not directly reduced to biological metaphors. However, its connection with the biological sciences, or, in general, the sciences of life seems to be close. In anatomy, the term topology is used to describe the studies based on anatomical regions and on structural relations; in biochemistry, the method of describing and predicting the orientation of transmembrane protein in the lipid bilayer is known as ‘membran ...
