THE EFFECTS IN THE QUALITY OF THE MARBLE BLOCK WHEN USING THE DETONATING CORD TECHNIQUE IN THE QUARRY
Abstract
THE EFFECTS OF USING DETONATING CORD IN PRODUCING MARBLE BLOCKS FROM THE QUARRYFACE ARE INVESTIGATED THEORETICALLY AND EXPERIMENTALLY BOTH IN THE LABORATORYAND IN SITU. MORE SPECIFICALLY THE THESIS DEALS WITH THE UNDERSTANDING OF THEPREVAILING FRACTURE MECHANISM DURING MARBLE QUARRYING AND THE ROLE PLAYED BYTHE PARAMETERS THAT DEFINE THE FINAL RESULT. FURTHER ON A SUITABLE METHODOLOGY IS SUGGESTED FOR THE DETECTION OF STRUCTURAL DEFECTS CAUSED BY THE DETONATING CORD USED IN EXTRACTING THE MARBLE BLOCK AND DISCUSSES THE APPLICATION OF NEW FINDINGS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE DETONATING CORD TECHNIQUE IN EXTRACTING GENERALLY DECORATIVE STONES.
