Serum levels of C-reactive protein in primary Sjogren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis
Abstract
The purpose of this study was: a) to evaluate whether primary Sjogren's syndrome can be categorized in one of the two groups of autoimmune rheumatic diseases with high or low C-reactive protein (C.R.P.) response, b) to compare serum C.R.P. levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated with D-penicillamine versus patients treated with non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (N.S.A.I.D.). This comparison was helpful in evaluating the usefulness of serial C.R.P. measurements in patients treated with D-penicillamine. Serum was obtained from 97 patients, 54 with primary Sjogren's syndrome and 43 with rheumatoid arthritis (17 treated with D-penicillamine and 26 treated with N.S.A.I.D.). The sera of 103 healthy subjects served as control. The main results were as follows: a) The patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome had very low serum C.R.P. levels (mean value 4,51 mg/l). b) The mean value of CR.P. in patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated with D-penicillamine was 6,51 mg/l while in ...
