Combination of intratumpanic and systemic steroids for idiopathic codden sensorineural hearing loss

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of intratympanic dexamethasone combined with systemic corticosteroid therapy in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). Materials and methods: A prospective, randomized, multicenter clinical trial was designed. A total of 92 eligible patients with ISSNHL were randomized into two groups. The forty-six controls were treated with systemic prednisolone alone. The patients of the therapy group received additionally 3 transtympanic dexamethasone injections within 5 days. The audiometric evaluation included pretreatment and posttreatment pure-tone audiograms and speech discrimination scores (SDS). The final assessment of hearing was performed 3 months after the completion of the treatment. Results: Significant hearing recovery was observed in 31 of 46 (67.39%) cases, and 24 of 46 (52.17%) control patients. Successful treatment was defined as a hearing improvement of greater than 10 dB in PTA and 15% in SDS. Patients ...
