Nikephoros Chrysovergis: Life and work: Mid-twelfth - early thirteenth century

Abstract

The life and work of Nikephoros Chrysovergis has already provoked the interest of researchers. However, until now there was not a detailed study of his life and his work. The present study aims to fill this gap.From the 10th century appears one large Byzantine "family", which has played an important role in Byzantium, the "family" of Chrysovergis. Most of them served the Byzantine Empire for six centuries as important political and ecclesiastical officers.Nikephoros Chrysovergis was possibly one of them. He served the Orthodox Church at least for 41 years. He was μαΐστωρ τῶν ρητόρων at the so-called Patriarchal School and after the first tragic fall of Constantinople in 1204 he became metropolitan of Sardis until the year 1213. From 1213 and after there is no information for him.His work includes six rhetorical orations, nine Progymnasmata: five μύθους, two ηθοποιίες and two διηγήσεις, one letter and twelve epigrams.
