The ultimate objective was to investigate and exploit end use of electricity generating units and their use along with Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in order to increase efficiency. The innovation was that there was an attempt to evaluate the penetration extent of solid waste treatment technologies with energy recovery to the system, based on international experience, adapted to Greek data and more specifically by combining the use of these units with units of RES (and how the system is being “transformed” specifying use level). Ιn the present dissertation entitled "Exergy and Multicriteria Analysis in the Solid Waste Management Area with the use of Renewable Energy Sources" the mismatch between the energy supply quality levels and the end uses it was studied while at the same time it was investigated the practical applicability of energy analysis looking at energy recovery systems through the minimization of losses of combined energy production units. The application of multicriteria analysis, the examination of several "case studies" using a linear and integer programming, meeting electricity needs using RES were the basis for this research and study. The problem of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management in Greece has reached a critical point because of the incomplete national planning of the past. The contamination of air, soil contamination, surface and ground water, fires created a negative impact not only on health issues but also in other fields of human activity. The problem of solid waste management is even more acute in urban and suburban centers, where most of the population resides and greater amounts of MSW are produced. A long-term promising solution in many European countries is the thermal treatment of MSW producing at the same time electricity in specially designed units. Space saving and operation of such factories "in perpetuity" are the critical advantages of solutions like these. Among other, however, the anarchic design of renewable energy technologies distribution is certainly a hindrance towards the sustainable development of the Greek system. The ratio of installed capacity and the limits of installed capacity on each technology should be reviewed regularly and revised based on the implementation of new projects, and on the development of new technological applications. The main result of this study was that for the first time a multifactorial innovative tool was applied based on exergy analysis and linear programming which determined not only how to meet country energy needs using renewables with the best way, but also to identify exergoeconomically the size, the performance on energy recovery units from municipal solid wastes and the penetration rate into the system. The combined application of exergy and multicriteria analysis as a tool for rational energy management can be particularly useful in the production and use of electricity. Through the proposed methodology the country's energy system is being analyzed, the energy characteristics of each region and the best way to satisfy these needs based on low cost and high efficiency are being determined as well. The ultimate goal of this dissertation was to investigate whether it is necessary to look for unique solutions to combat the energy problem in Greece or if combined solutions can meet energy needs, based on exergy and multivariable analysis, combined with the pioneering study on the rate that each \RES can contribute.
