THE LUMBAR SPINAL CANAL: A PATHOLOGICAL, RADIOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL STUDY-CORRELATION OF FINDINGS
Abstract
THE DIAMETERS OF THE LUMBAR SPINAL CANAL AT VARIOUS LEVELS WERE MEASURED IN 37 CADAVERIC SPECIMENS OF THE WHOLE LUMBAR SPINE. THE SAME MEASUREMENTS WERE REPEATED ON CT AND MRI PICTURES OF THE SAME MATERIAL. SATISFACTORY CORRELATION BETWEEN THE MEASUREMENTS OF THE TWO RADIOLOGIC TECHNIQUES WAS FOUND. THE RELIABILITY OF THE CT MEASUREMENTS WAS SLIGHTLY HIGHER COMPARED TO THOSE OF THE MRI.THE SHAPE OF THE LUMBAR SPINAL CANAL SHOWED A SMOOTH, GRADUAL TRANSITION FROM A CIRCULAR TO A TRIANGULAR CONFIGURATION IN A CRANIOCAUDAL DIRECTION. THE SAGGITAL DIAMETER WAS NARROWEST AT THE L3-L4 LEVEL. IT IS DIFFICULT TO ESTABLISH A CAUSATIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TRIFOIL CONFIGURATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF STENOSIS.
