Implementation of classical and novel methodologies to control verticillium wilt of olive
Abstract
Verticillium wilt is the most serious disease affecting olive in Mediterranean countries and California. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate methods to control the disease as well as to investigate the possible mechanisms of resistance of olive cultivars against against Verticillium dahliae. This research was focused on four basic directions: a) evaluation of resistance of potentially olive rootstocks against V. dahliae, b) resistance evaluation and differentiation of three famous Greek olive cultivars (cvs Amfissis, Kalamon, Koroneiki) against the defoliating and non defoliating V. dahliae pathotypes, c) biological control of Verticillium wilt of olive using the antagonistic agent Paenibacillus alvei K-165, d) investigation of the involvement of antifungul compounds in defence responses of olive cultivars to V. dahliae.
