John-Hierotheos Komnenos Metropolitan of Dristra ( 1657-1719): Life - Ecclesiastical activities - Works
Abstract
The present prosopographical study is devoted to John Komnenos (1657-1719), an important member of the Greek intellectual life in the Ottoman Empire. Along with a large number of other scholars, Komnenos would prepare the ground for the flourishing of Greek letters in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, leaving his personal mark. Very little is known about his life and work. Though limited in his literary production, his compositions are important. A number of them were re-worked or attributed to other authors. His turbulent life, the wide range of his activities and his cosmopolitan spirit made his presence felt outside the limits of the Turkish occupied Greece. This is evident by his close association with Moldavia and Wallachia, to such an extent that he is considered as one of the most distinguished scholars in Romanian literature, while his scholarship was much appreciated by intellectual circles in Russia where he spent part of his life.
