The diagnostic value of the method quantiferon-TB in tuberculosis infection

Abstract

Background: The tuberculin skin test, (TST), is a useful test for the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection , but it’s diagnostic value is restricted in people who have been vaccinated with BCG, or in those who have been infected by other mycobacteria. Quantiferon (QFT) - TB Gold test is a commercial gamma-interferon release assay for tuberculosis. It defines IFN-γ released by T-lymphocytes after stimulation with specific antigens (ESAT-6 and CFP-10) , in people who have been infected by M. tuberculosis. In this study, we examined the diagnostic value of QFT-TB test in comparison to tuberculin skin test (TST) in patients with confirmed tuberculosis and in high risk for latent tuberculosis insection (LTBI). Methods: We retrospectively studied the files of all patients who visited the TBC Outpatient Clinic of Sotiria Chest Athens Hospitaland the 1st Department of Propaedeutic Medicine of the University of Athens for atuberculosis infection during years2007 and 2008.
