The scope of the doctoral thesis is the analytical investigation of planar and wedge-shaped double-negative metamaterial structures. Regarding the planar slab, an integrated method for the investigation of its focusing characteristics is introduced. More specifically, the transfer coefficient from the source to the focus plane is used for the determination of the system's resolution. Furthermore, two new correlation criteria, based on the concepts of correlation coefficient and mean-square error, are proposed for the extraction of the optimum focus plane position. The efficiency of the method is, extensively, tested by means of a theoretical and a numerical analysis. Successively, the field dynamic behavior of the planar geometry is examined in the presence of an amplitude modulated source. To this end, the time-dependent electric field intensity is computed through integration, initially, with respect to frequency and then with respect to wavevector. Thus, analytical expressions are obtained, avoiding any numerical integration used in the literature for the same problem. Closed-form expressions for the first integral are derived through a rigorous mathematical analysis in the frequency plane and are, elaborately, tested for their accuracy. Then, the second integral is computed via a stationary phase approximation. A complete physical interpretation of the, so developed, field expressions is provided and an interpretation of the evanescent waves amplification phenomenon is described. On the other hand, the double-negative wedge is solved, for the first time, via the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform. Among the advantages of this approach is the establishment of a direct analogy between wedge-shaped and planar structures. In particular, the field in the wedge-shaped geometry is expressed as superposition of modes corresponding to the poles of the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform, just as the field in the planar geometry is expressed via a set of modes which arise from the spatial Fourier transform singularities. Unlike double-positive wedges, in the double-negative case there exist complex poles, which correspond to modes of the same nature as the surface waves in planar slabs. Moreover, the complete spectrum is constituted of modes, involving Hankel functions of both kinds. Notice that the case of a double-negative material with refractive index equal, in an absolute value sense, to the refractive index of the surrounding space, which is, actually, examined in the present thesis, is representative of the general case, since it examines phenomena, such as negative refraction and the excitation of surface waves, which arise in the general case.
