Pharmacokinetic / pharmacodynamic correlation of amoxicillin in sheep

Abstract

Amoxicillin (AMX), a semi-synthetic, broad-spectrum α-amino-p-hydroxybenzylpenicillin has been long used in veterinary medical practice for the treatment of bacterial respiratory, urinary, gastrointestinal, dermal, dental and other infections. In sheep therapeutics, AMX is typically administered intramuscularly as its trihydrate form, contained in conventional or long-acting formulations (suspensions). Although published pharmacokinetic studies of AMX in several animal species and humans generally describe a highly variable distribution in several body organs and tissues (i.e. good penetration in kidneys, liver, lungs, muscles, peritoneal, pleural and synovial fluids, etc. versus reduced penetration in the central nervous system, aqueous humour, lacrimal fluid, sweat, saliva and milk), no relevant data exist in sheep.
