Structural study of embryogenesis and of functional development of olfactory system

Abstract

A large number of specimens of olfactory epithelium were examined using the latest immunohistochemical techniques. The specimens were taken from the olfactory area of aborded fetuses of the second trimester of gestation. Though the primary aim to obtain pictures of human olfactory epithelium and of its evolution was accomplished, a number of parallel relative conclusions have been inscripted. NSE is the best technique from all we tested to visualize the neural elements of olfactory epithelium. These elements are not pure neural cells as widespread is believed but neuroepithelial cells. They can be considered as evolution of epithelial cells with neural elements included. This explains their ability to reproduce and the attitude of tumors such as olfactory esthesioneuroblastoma.
