INFLUENCE OF THE THICKNESS AND THE STRUCTURE ON THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF GALVANIZED COATINGS
Abstract
HOT-DIP GALVANIZING IS THE MOST COMMON WIDELY USED METHOD FOR THE CATHODIC PROTECTION OF STEEL. ALTHOUGH THIS METHOD HAS BEEN SYSTEMATICALLY STUDIED FOR MANY DECADES, MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SOLUBILITY OF ELEMENTS IN THE INTERMETALLIC LAYERS AND THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR BOTH OF THE COATING AND THE ABOVE LAYERS HAVEN'T RECEIVED AN ANSWER YET. THE INFLUENCE OF COPPER (CU), CADMIUM (CD), AND TIN (SN) ON THE STRUCTURE AND THE THICKNESS OF THE GALVANIZED COATING IS EXAMINEDIN THE FIRST PART OF THIS THESIS IN CONNECTION WITH NEW TECHNIQUES (SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (SEM()#) POINT DETECTION ANALYSIS, X-RAY DIFFRACTION (XRD) AND CONCLUSIONS ABOUT THE ACCURATE ROLE OF THE ABOVE ELEMENTS ON THE DEVELOPMENTOF COATING ARE DRAWN. THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF THE INTERMETALLIC LAYERS ANDITS RELATION WITH THE STRUCTURE AND THE THICKNESS OF THE GALVANIZED COATING ISEXAMINED IN THE SECOND PART.
