HYDROGEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OF THE KARSTIC AND NEOGENE SYSTEMS OF THE MOLAI BASIN-IN LACONIA-GREECE
Abstract
VERTICAL MOVEMENTS OCCURED DURING THE NEOGENE IN THE AREA OF STUDY FOLLOWING THE DIRECTION OF OLDER FAULTS (VIZ. NNW TO NW AND NNE TO NE). THUS GRABENS AND HORSTS WERE CREATED (E.G. MOLAI GRABEN, ASOPOS HORST, PLYTRA GRABEN. THERE WERE RECOGNISED FOUR KARSTIC EROSIONAL SURFACES. THE GEOLOGIC FORMATIONS OUTCROPPING IN THE MOLAI AREA ARE THE FOLLOWING: A) PHYLLITE-QUARTZITE SERIES, B) TYROS BEDS, C) TRIPOLITSA LIMESTONES, D) OLONOS ZONE, E) PELAGONIAN ZONE, F) THIC NEOGENE SEDIMENTS, THE EQUATION EXPRESSING THE RELATION BETWEEN ALTITUDE (X) AND PRECIPITATION (Y) WAS Y=0.573X + 588,5. THE WATERS OF THE KARST AQUIFER DISCHARGE THROUGH THE COASTAL SUBMARINE SPRINGS OF GLYFADA WITH A RATE OF 1.3 L/S. SEA WATER INTRUSION IN THE KARST AQUIFER OCCURS VIA NNW AND NW STRIKING FAULTS, WHILE IN THE NEOGENE AQUIFER DUE TO OVERPUMPING OF THE DRILLED BOREHOLES SOUTH OF ASOPOS.
