A CONTRIBUTION TO QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF DRAINAGE SYSTEMS IN PALEOGEOGRAPHICAL EVOLUTION OF VOLVI MOUNTAINS CENTRAL MACEDONIA NORTH GREECE
Abstract
THE AIM OF THE THESIS WAS THE DETECTION OF THE POSSIBLE STAGES OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVOLUTION OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS ON VOLVI MOUNTAINS. THE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS WERE DRAWN FROM AIRPHOTOS AND WERE USED TO MEASURE AND CALCULATE PARAMETERS WHICH EXPRESS THE DIMENSION AND SHAPE OF THE BASINS, THE RELIEF, THE DEGREE OF DISSECTION AND THE AZIMUTHS OF THE STREAM SEGMENTS. THESE AZIMUTHS SHOWED HOW MUCH THE DRAINAGE NETWORK WAS INFLUENCED BY THE FAULT LINES. THE REST OF THE PARAMETERS STUDIED BY FACTOR ANALYSIS AND GAVE NEW EVIDENCES CONCERNING THE ROLE OF THE BASIN RELIEF ON THE FORMATION OF THE BASIN'S DIMENSIONS. ALSO, THREE ISOLINE MAPS WERE CONSTRUCTED PRESENTING THE EVOLUTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS AND PALAEORELIEF IN TWO SUCCESSIVELY STAGES.
