Language contacts in South East Peloponnese
Abstract
This dissertation belongs to the field of language contact. Its subject is the comparative sociolinguistic examination of language change, in particular language contraction in Tsakonia and Arvanitika, two language systems located in the south-east Peloponnese. Arvanitika is a hetero-roofed variety in a state of linguistic competition with the roofing language, Modern Greek. Tsakonian, on the other hand, according to Tzitzilis, represents a special kind of auto-roofed variety since it is a Modern Greek dialect that is not mutually intellible with Standard Modern Greek.
