Anatomical and functional adaptations of the heart of elite volley ball athletes during their annual training season
Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the anatomical and functional adaptations of the heart, as well as the aerobic capacity and the cardiac parasympathetic nervous system’s activity of elite volleyball athletes during their annual training season. The study was performed on 12 professional male athletes aged 24.0+4.9 years. They all were members of a first national division team. All athletes were submitted to anthropometric measurements, fat estimation, spirometry, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, treadmill exercise testing, ergospirometry, measurement of blood lactate, and ambulatory continuous recording of the heart rate. The most important indicators that were recorded from the tests were height, body fat (%), vital capacity, forced vital capacity, resting and maximal heart rate, end-diastolic volume of the left ventricle, left ventricle mass, % EF, VO2max, exercise duration, maximal lactate and heart rate variability (HRV).
