Experimental and analytical study on the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete walls repaired and strengthened using fibre reinforced polymers

Abstract

The present thesis assesses the effectiveness of using fibre reinforced polymers(FRPs) strenghtening reinforces concrete(R?C) structural walls that were tested to failure during a first series of tests, and were subsequently repaired, before being strengthened with FRP sheets. For this purpose an experimental programme was designed that included the repair and strengthening of eleven 1:2.5 scale wall specimens. For the repair of specimens, heavily cracked and spalled concrete was removed from the wall base, and the base region was filled with high strenght non-shrinkage mortar. Specimens were strengthened by the use of GFRP(Glass FRP) and CFRP(Carbon FRP) to enhance both flexural and shear capacity. A key parameter was the way CFRP strips added for flexural strengthening were anchored. The imposed displacements were applied at the top of the specimens in a quasi-static way until failure occured. During tests, strenght and displacement of the specimens were recorded, along with shear an ...
