JUVENILE MYOCLONIC EPILEPSY
Abstract
IN THIS COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH WE STUDIED 25 PATIENTS. MYOCLONIC JERKS MAINLY(68%) OCCURRED AFTER WAKING UP. THEY WERE USUALLY BILATERAL, BUT SOMETIMES WERE UNILATERAL ONLY. THE MOST POWERFUL PRECIPITANTS OF THE JERKS WERE SLEEP DEPRIVATION, ALCOHOL CONSU MPTION, ANXIETY FATIGUE AND SUDDEN AWAKENING. IN 84%OF THE PATIENTS, JERKS WERE FOLLOWED BY GRAND-MAL SEIZURES AND IN 4% OF THEM BY ABSENCES AND GRAND-MAL SEIZURES. ABSENCES HAD THEIR ONSET AT 12 YEARS, JERKS AT 17.4+-6.1 YEARS AND GRAND-MAL SEIZURES AT 1 8.2+-5.9 YEARS. INTERICTALEEG SHOWED BILATERAL COMPLEXES OF SPIKE OR POLYSPIKES-SLOW WAVES, AS WELL ASBURSTS OF SHARP WAVES. FOCAL ABNORMALITIES WERE RECORDED IN 44% OF THE PATIENTS. THE MOST PROVOCATIVE FACTORS OF EEG ABNORMALITIES WERE CERTAIN NEUROPSY CHOLOGICAL TESTS, E.G. SPATIAL ORIENTATION, MENTALLY SOLIVNG OF ARITHMETICAL PROBLEMS ETC.
