THE STRUCTURE OF THE TURBULENT TEMPERATURE FIELD ABOVE HEATED PLANES
Abstract
THE RESULTS OF AN EXPERIMENT ARE PRESENTED, CONSERNING THE STRUCTURE OF THE FREE CONVECTION TURBULENT TEMPERATURE FIELD, CREATED ABOVE A HEATED PLANE, IN RELATION TO LARGE SCALE STRUCTURES. TWO CONFIGURATIONS WERE EXAMINED NAMELY, THE HORIZONTAL AND THAT INCLINED AT 45 DEGREES. SINCE THE FLOW ABOVE THE HORIZONTAL PLATE IS NEARLY HOMOGENEOUS THIS CONFIGURATION WAS ALSO USED AS A REFERENCE CASE. THE OBTAINED MEASUREMENTS CONSISTED OF MEAN AND STATISTICAL TURBULENT QUANTITIES. IN THE HORIZONTAL CASE THE TURBULENT FIELD WAS FOUND DOUBLE STRUCTURED ANDDEPARTING SIGNIFICANTLY FROM HOMOGENITY. THE DETECTED RISING COLUMNS OF HEATEDAIR WERE ORIGINATED FROM INSTABILITIES CREATED WITHIN THE "CONVECTIVE" LAYER. IN THE CASE OF THE INCLINED PLATE THE FLOW FIELD WAS FOUND TO BE COMPLICATED EXHIBITING THE COMBINED CHARACTERISTICS OF A THERMAL BOUNDARY LAYER AND A FREE CONVECTION FLOW ABOVE A HORIZONTAL PLATE.
