VERSINIAE AND VERSINIOSIS IN THALASSAEMIC CHILDREN

Abstract

THE PRESENCE OF YERSINIA ENTEROCOLITICA IN THE FAECES AND OF YERSINIA AGGLUTINATING ANTIBODIES IN THE BLOOD OF THALASSAEMIC CHILDREN ARE EXAMINED. NONE OF THE 214 NON DIARRHOEAL CHILDREN VISITED THE TWO THALASSAEMIA OUTPATIENT UNITS DURING A PERIOD OF 14 MONTHS (APRIL 1981 - MAY 1982) HAVE HAD YERSINIA IN THE FAECES, EXCEPT ONE CARRYING THE FISH PATHOGEN YERSINIA RUCKERII. NONE OF THE THALASSAEMIC CHILDREN HAVE HAD YERSINIA AGGLUTINATING ANTIBODIES IN TITERS. HOWEVER 13 THALASSAEMIC CHILDREN WERE ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL DURING THE ABOVE MENTIONED PERIOD OF 14 MONTHS, WITH ACUTE ABDOMINAL OR GENERAL SEPTICAEMIC DISEASE AS YERSINIA INFECTIONS. (SHORTENED)
