CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF LANGERHANS CELLS DURING WOUND HEALING. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY IN RATS

Abstract

LANGERHANS CELLS ARE EPIDERMAL CELLS AND WERE DESCRIBED BY P. LANGERHANS IN 1868. FOR SOME TIME AFTER THEIR DISCOVERY, THEIR ORIGIN, NATURE AND FUNCTIONS REMAINED UNKNOWN. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE (1) THE QUANTITATIVE DISTRIBUTION OF LANGERHANS CELLS DURING THE HEALING PROCESS OF EXPERIMENTALLY INDUCED WOUNDS IN THE ORAL MUCOSA OF WISTAR RATS AND (2) THE QUANTITATIVE DISTRIBUTION OF LANGERHANS CELLS AS COMPARED TO THE MITOTIC ACTIVITY OF ORAL EPITHELIAL CELLS IN THE SAME ANIMALS. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY SUPPORT THE FOLLOWING THEORIES. (1) THAT LANGERHANS CELLS DO NOT ORIGINATE FROM THE EPITHELIUM (2) THAT LANGERHANS CELLS ARE OF MESENCHYMAL ORIGIN AND (3) THE REVERSE RELATIONSHIP WHICH WAS OBSERVED BETWEEN LANGERHANS CELLS NUMBER AND THE RATE OF EPITHELIAL CELL PROLIFERATION DOES NOT HOWEVER MEAN THAT LANGERHANS CELLS PLAY A REGULATORY ROLE IN EPITHELIAL CELL PROLIFERATION.
