BIOLOGY AND DYNAMICS OF THE FISH ALBURNUS ALBURNUS (L., 1758) IN LAKE KORONIA

Abstract

THE PRESENT WORK EXAMINES THE BIOLOGY AND POPULATION DYNAMICS OF BLEAK IN LAKE KORONIA OF N. GREECE, A REGION REPRESENTING THE SOUTHEST LIMITS OF THE SPECIESDISTRIBUTION. ITS GROWTH IN LENGTH WAS RAPID DURING THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF LIFE, WHEREAS LATER (AFTER MATURITY) IT BECAME SLOWER. THE TWO SEXES SHOWED DIFFERENT PATTERNS OF GROWTH, AND MALES DID NOT EXCEED THE AGE OF IV YEARS WHEREAS FEMALES REACHED VII YEARS. THE ASYMPTOTIC TOTAL LENGTH (LOO) OF THE POPULATION WAS CALCULATED AT 15,5 CM, WHICH WAS SMALLER THAN THAT OF OTHER NORTHEST POPULATIONS OF THE SPECIES. SEASONALLY, THE GROWTH TOOK PLACE BETWEEN THE END OF THE REPRODUCTION SEASON (END OF SUMMER OR BEGINNING OF AUTUMN) AND THE BEGINNING OF WINTER, AND ALSO AT THE END OF WINTER AND BEFORE REPRODUCTION. THE PERPODUCTION SEASON OF BLEAK IN LAKE KORONIA WAS PARTICULARLY LONG IN COMPARISON WITH THE NORTHEST POPULATIONS OF THE SPECIES (END OF APRIL OR BEGINNINGOF MAY - SEPTEMBER). THE SPAWNING WAS MULTIPLE WITH A ...
