Learning disabilities (LDs) are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by significant challenges in acquiring and using spoken and written language, as well as logical and learning skills. These difficulties often lead to poor school performance and social rejection. The necessity for differentiated instruction can be traced back to historical approaches to education. Education in the Middle Ages was predominantly shaped by monastic and cathedral schools, which, although structured, were limited in accessibility and did not cater to students with diverse learning needs. Special education was virtually non-existent, and individuals with disabilities were often marginalized or left under the care of religious institutions. The rise of universities in the 12th century introduced more structured learning, but it remained largely inaccessible to students with learning difficulties. Only much later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, did educational systems begin to acknowledge and address diverse learning needs, with figures such as Jean Marc Gaspard Itard pioneering special education methods. These early efforts paved the way for modern approaches, including differentiated instruction. Teachers must adopt differentiated teaching practices to meet the needs of diverse student populations and support students with LDs. Differentiated teaching tailors content, processes, and learning products to individual learning profiles, enabling students to access information and engage effectively. This approach is particularly relevant in special education, addressing the unique abilities and challenges faced by students with LDs. The literature review discusses how learning disabilities affect cognitive and academic growth, often involving difficulties in reading, writing, and mathematics. Definitions by scholars and frameworks such as DSM-5 emphasize the persistence of LDs, despite conventional educational practices, and highlight their central nervous system origins. The Response to Intervention (RTI) model is presented as an evidence-based approach that supports early identification and intervention within inclusive classroom settings. The theoretical underpinnings of differentiated teaching include Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory and Gardner’s multiple intelligences, advocating for flexible teaching that addresses various learning preferences. Differentiated instruction involves customizing content, processes, and learning products to match students' readiness and interests, thereby fostering a more engaging and personalized educational experience. Teachers play a crucial role in implementing differentiation through continuous assessment, formative feedback, and adapting classroom strategies to suit diverse student needs. Despite its effectiveness, challenges remain, including time constraints, limited resources, and curriculum rigidity. The present research investigates secondary school special education teachers' understanding and application of differentiated teaching practices in northwest Greece, assessing challenges faced during implementation. The study involves 301 teachers, primarily female and varied in age, experience, and training background. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire based on Karam Siam and Mayada Al-Natour’s (2016) framework and analyzed using SPSS software. Results show a positive correlation between understanding and the practical application of differentiated practices, though application lags behind comprehension. Teachers trained in differentiated instruction and those with specialized degrees demonstrated better implementation. Significant barriers included planning time, limited professional development, and lack of institutional support. The findings align with international research indicating that teacher training and experience enhance the effective use of differentiated practices. However, experienced teachers often encounter difficulties adapting established routines, suggesting the need for continuous professional development. Recommendations include targeted training programs, supportive school policies, and administrative assistance to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. This study contributes to the broader discourse on special education by identifying factors that influence teachers' ability to implement differentiated instruction effectively. While teachers in Greece recognize the value of differentiated teaching, practical application faces hurdles due to time, resources, and support. Future research should incorporate mixed methods, including interviews and classroom observations, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of teachers' challenges and successes in employing differentiated teaching practices.
