This doctoral dissertation is conducted within the framework of teaching Modern Greek as a second language to Spanish-speaking learners at the Modern Greek Language School “Panagiotis Kontos.” The study investigates the use of metadiscourse markers (textual and interpersonal) in written discourse, drawing on Hyland’s (2005, 2015) theory and, more specifically, its Greek adaptation proposed by Koutsoulelou (2018), as it offers a more comprehensive reader oriented framework of analysis, focusing not only on discourse coherence but also on the relationship between the writer and the reader. The research is based on a corpus of non-narrative (argumentative) and narrative texts produced by learners at four proficiency levels (B1, B2, C1, and C2), allowing for the examination of the development of learners’ mastery of these markers in relation to their language proficiency. The primary aim of the study is to examine the nature of metadiscourse markers through the analysis of their frequency ...

The research is based on a corpus of non-narrative (argumentative) and narrative texts produced by learners at four proficiency levels (B1, B2, C1, and C2), allowing for the examination of the development of learners’ mastery of these markers in relation to their language proficiency. The primary aim of the study is to examine the nature of metadiscourse markers through the analysis of their frequency of occurrence in written productions, the categories to which they belong, their degree of alignment with the New Analytical Examination Program for the Certification of Proficiency in Greek developed by the Center for the Greek Language (Antonopoulou et al. 2013), their realization as single-word and multi-word expressions, and errors in their form and use. Furthermore, the study explores the role of metadiscourse markers in the development of textual cohesion and coherence. Overall, the findings indicate that metadiscourse markers are used to a satisfactory extent in both non-narrative (argumentative) and narrative texts. Textual markers are mainly associated with the structure and organization of discourse, whereas interpersonal markers are related to deixis and modality. Their use, however, varies according to the specific characteristics of non-narrative (argumentative) and narrative texts.
