This dissertation examines the ways in which France, and by extension French society, sought to come to terms with its colonial past. What constitutes this colonial past? What traces has it left on French society, and how has the French state confronted this uneasy legacy? Finally, what is the role of justice in the process of managing colonial trauma, and how does it interact with history and memory? The study focuses on the Indochina and Algeria Wars through the media and judicial affairs of Georges Boudarel and Paul Aussaresses (1991–2005). By arguing that the memories of these two wars are interconnected, this research seeks, through a comparative analysis, to highlight the pivotal role of the Indochina War in reactivating France's colonial trauma, a process that subsequently culminated in the memory of the Algerian War. Seeking to move beyond established historiographical interpretations that focus on the Algerian War as a singular event whose memory followed a linear trajectory from oblivion to hypermnesia (in terms of Henry Rousso), this study instead examines the processes that preceded this development. It argues that the memories of an earlier and largely forgotten war —the Indochina War —activated the mechanisms of the French state and set in motion the institutional processes through which France came to terms with both the legacy of the Algerian War and its colonial past more broadly. Finally, by arguing that the institutional management of the colonial past constitutes a long-term process structured around three major milestones —the amnesty laws, the postcolonial judicial proceedings, and the 23 February 2005 memory law on the colonial past— this dissertation seeks to trace the social, political, and cultural transformations that accompanied the transition from one stage to the next. In doing so, it identifies three corresponding phases in this broader process of coming to terms with France's colonial past: transition, confrontation, and institutionalization.
