Situated at the intersection of gender and feminist studies and social anthropology, this doctoral thesis explores the modalities of counter-hegemonies and the expressions of feminist hegemony in the multi-ritual Andalusian chronotope. Through an ethnography of feminist communities in the Carnival of Cádiz, the research examines how these groups constitute a potent communitas, addressing how feminist hegemony is performed in carnival rituals and how these performances dramatise critical historical and political thresholds in contemporary Spanish society. The carnival is inscribed in the political, cultural and geo-corporal milieu of Cádiz and Andalusia through a feminist and decolonial perspective. This approach foregrounds the diverse chronotopicities of festive rituals, feminist resistances and carnival performances, whilst tracking the ways in which the Andalusian “palimpsest of patriarchy” is contested. Simultaneously, the research responds to the desire of participants to have their silenced stories recorded: by placing the concept of the autora-author and their narratives at the centre, the thesis contributes to an original recording of local history. The varying levels of power relations, anti-hierarchies, and gender conflicts directed against naturalised inequality are conceptualised as processes of “carnival citizenship”. This framework directs attention towards a gendered and ritual “becoming” rather than a fixed “being”, where the symbolic-political level encompasses embodied materialities and festive economies. Examining the subject through the lens of carnival citizenship allows for a deeper understanding of the ritual structure. Crucially, it challenges ahistorical, essentialist and homogenising perceptions of the subjects, refusing to enclose the category of “woman”, “feminism” and “ritual” into a singular exclusionary definition and thus opening space for anthropological plurals. The thesis also constitutes a critical documentation of the performances of “the political” in contemporary feminisms in the Spanish state and the Andalusian South. It follows parallel paths with the completion of the Transition (Transición) to democracy, the preservation of historical counter-memory, the formation of contemporary popular assembly movements and the theories and practices of the contemporary feminist strike. The research methodology is positioned as a site of experimentation and communal process, employing auto-ethnographic narrative and critical reflection on the concept of feminist writing. Finally, the study maps the liminal sites where ritual and activism meet, identifying critical emic categories for the analysis of political organisation and alternative forms of political kinship, facilitating an understanding of the “imaginary-desirous” cosmology of festive performances and the political communities that inhabit them.
