The present thesis approaches the Pentecostarion in its current liturgical use not merely as a liturgical book, but also as a unified and systematically researchable hymnographical corpus, within which the dogmatic experience of the Church is faithfully preserved and its theology is poetically articulated. The objective of this study is the entirety of the hymnography contained in this book, from Easter to the Sunday of All Saints. The study also aims to systematically document, analyze and thematically classify the hymns, as well as to provide their theological synthesis and interpretative approach in light of the Church’s written patristic tradition and contemporary scholarship, particularly with regard to the Christological and soteriological themes developed within it. Despite the rich partial study of hymnographical and liturgical topics, the Pentecostarion in its current use had not previously been systematically examined as a unified dogmatic body from the perspective of its Chr ...
Despite the rich partial study of hymnographical and liturgical topics, the Pentecostarion in its current use had not previously been systematically examined as a unified dogmatic body from the perspective of its Christological and soteriological coherence; this is the gap that the present research seeks to fulfil. The study begins with the doctrine concerning God and humanity, examining the Trinitarian and anthropological presuppositions of salvation, and proceeds to highlight the redemptive work of the Lord as expressed hymnographically. Particular emphasis is placed on presenting the unity of the divine economy. The Incarnation, the Passion, the Descent into Hades, the Resurrection, the Ascension, the sending of the Holy Spirit, the constitution and life of the Church, and the eschatological expectation are not treated in the Pentecostarion as fragmented festal themes, but as interconnected aspects of one indivisible soteriological reality. The thesis demonstrates that the hymnography of the Pentecostarion possesses a clear dogmatic structure and accurately expresses the Church’s Christological faith, as well as salvation understood as ontological renewal. At the same time, the ecclesiological character of salvation is brought to light, as salvation is experienced personally, yet always within the ecclesial body. A distinctive contribution of this thesis is the systematic thematic presentation of Christ’s redemptive work in relation to His threefold salvific office—the prophetic, the priestly, and the kingly—as distinct yet inseparable expressions of the one divine economy. Although this threefold office constitutes indivisible aspects of Christ’s single and undivided work, the thesis examines it as discrete thematic units in order to demonstrate clearly the manner in which the hymnography of the Pentecostarion presents the Lord as the supreme Prophet and Teacher, as the true High Priest who saves through His Passion and Resurrection, and as the King of glory who abolishes the power of death, gives life to the human race, renews creation, and leads history toward its ultimate fulfillment. Finally, this work contributes to scholarly research by demonstrating that the Pentecostarion is a source of high liturgical theology, which, despite its poetic character, authentically and precisely expresses—with ecclesial consciousness—the dogmatic faith and experience of the Church. Its hymnography does not constitute merely festal poetic expression, but rather a bearer of lived theology and a systematically valuable dogmatic witness to the Church’s Christological and soteriological consciousness.
