Agential materialities within post-contemporary art workshops: facilitating selfhood, otherness, critical theory, and storytelling

Abstract

This dissertation explores the significance of materiality within contemporary art workshops in bridging differences and communicating opinions. Leading up to the critical shift in the nineties, there have been increased discussions in science and technology studies to notice the ontological aspects of material objects. However, it remains unclear how visual arts contribute to this shift. Through this research, I demonstrate the transformative potential of tactile materialities within art workshops by analyzing four case studies that I designed and cofacilitated, driven by posthuman feminist material theories. I conducted research through art practice by collecting data with a mixed-methods approach, including autoethnography, artwork observations, surveys, and discussions.
