The Policy of autonomy in education: the example of Great Britain and its impact on Greece

Abstract

Autonomy in the field of education has emerged as a crucial dimension of the educational system globally in recent decades, presenting itself as a solution to the challenges faced by public education. In this context, the present study aims to examine the evolution of autonomy in the education sector over forty years (1980-2020) in the United Kingdom, serving as a significant example in the under-study policy. The research analyzes the main political directions, programs, and practices that have shaped the educational landscape in this country. Given the progress made in the United Kingdom, it serves as a benchmark for monitoring and comparing with the educational trajectory of Greece. Using the method of comparative case study, the neoliberal turn in Greece's educational policy and the progression towards autonomy in all dimensions of the educational system are scrutinized.
