The writing of intimacy: a reading of the private diaries of Ion Dragoumis, George Seferis and George Theotokas from the perspective of genre theory

Abstract

The Greek private diaries that have been published have not previously been the object of consistent critical interest and the features or characteristics of this genre of writing remain largely unknown or neglected. A generic study of the Greek private diary will contribute to a better understanding of the individual Greek journals and of the character of the whole genre. French diary theory has pointed out three characteristics of the private diary. These are: the diversity of its content, the inevitability of dates that fragment the diary text into entries and the presence of intimacy. These characteristics apply also to the Greek private diaries that are examined: Φύλλα ημερολογίου (1895-1920; first published 1985-1988) by Ion Dragoumis, Μέρες (1925-1960; first published 1973-1990) by George Seferis and Τετράδια ημερολογίου (1939-1953; first published 1987) by George Theotokas.
