Is the Future Human or Posthuman? Apocalypse, Technoscience and Survival in Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam Trilogy and Hugh Howey's Silo Trilogy
Abstract
This dissertation focuses on Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy and Hugh Howey’s Silo trilogy. The goal of this critical investigation is to view these works, both separately and in conjunction, in order to examine their depiction of human and posthuman characters in the context of techno-scientific developments. This project takes into consideration the theories of humanists and posthumanists such as Tony Davies, Paul Kurtz, Rosi Braidotti and Cary Wolfe in order to pinpoint Atwood’s stance towards western technoscience. Moreover, it analyzes Howey’s representation of surveillance methods and computer technology as political tools of oppression and manipulation. Apocalypse in Howey’s trilogy is the outcome of global political rivalries and the erosion of democracy and human rights. Both Atwood and Howey explore the terms of survival in the hostile conditions of a post-apocalyptic world and speculate on the ability of humans to come to terms with new environmental realities.
