The aim of the present PhD thesis is to define and describe the identity of the student body of the University of Athens during the Interwar, a period of major sociopolitical changes, transformation of the higher education, and restriction of the hitherto dominant role of the University. The thesis proceeded in two directions: on the one hand, it sought to outline the changes during this period by associating them with the historical context and, on the other, it sought to perceive and comprehend them within the overall course of the student body. During the Interwar period, the student community grew much stronger and more visible, primarily through an increase in numbers. This was due to the students’ return to the classrooms, after having served in the army during the war decade of 1912–1922, to the arrival and settlement of refugees in Greece, especially following the Asia Minor Catastrophe, as well as to students from the Greek diaspora, all of whom were granted “benefits” for the ...
This was due to the students’ return to the classrooms, after having served in the army during the war decade of 1912–1922, to the arrival and settlement of refugees in Greece, especially following the Asia Minor Catastrophe, as well as to students from the Greek diaspora, all of whom were granted “benefits” for their studies. Further contributing factors included the enrolment of female students at the University of Athens, combined with the expansion of the school network and the educational reforms of the period. At the same time, a new category was formed, much broader than in previous years: that of destitute or poor students. For its part, the University sought to reduce the student population, a demand to which the state consented by introducing measures for the selection and number of admitted students; nevertheless, the increase was significant. Meanwhile, the bonds between the members of the student community grew stronger, due to the systematisation and enrichment of university studies, providing a much more tangible dimension to the students’ status. Finally, as an outcome of all the above, a new kind of unionism developed in the universities, also tied to the intense political climate of the time. Student activism took on a multidimensional and more dynamic character, due also to the emergence of leftist ideas in student audiences, ideas that were met with a campaign of anti-communist discourse and disciplinary action by the University. Overall, the Interwar years were a crucial period in paving the way for the transition from the student body of the 19th century to that of the 20th, a transition that was bound up with the political and social context of the period.
