Female representations in Greek children’s literature: contemporary children’s picture books

Abstract

Children’s literature is an integral part of childhood, operating both as a source of amusement as well as of socialization for children. Through gender representations in children’s books, children form perceptions about their gender and are provided with behavioral models of gender roles they will be asked to play as adults. This thesis studies the female representations in Greek children’s literature of the last decade and more specifically, of the years 2009 - 2019, in order to examine whether the female is depicted stereotypically in contemporary children’s books. For the analyses of the selected children’s books, we have drawn from specific strands of feminist literary criticism, from theoretical approaches concerning the role of ideology in literature, as well as from studies concerning the gender related sociological circumstances in contemporary Greece.
