Ethnography at the limit: the case of homeless people in the city of Thessaloniki
Abstract
This doctoral thesis focuses on the ethnographic presentation and anthropological approach to the daily life of the homeless who live on the streets of Thessaloniki. With reference to the voice, that is, the speech, of the homeless people themselves, the issue of their visibility or invisibility is attempted, their continuous struggle for their physical survival, the practices they follow in their everyday life, their eating habits, the relationships they develop with each other as well as with those who have a permanent accommodation. Issues related to the insecurity of street life, health problems they arise, the difficulties in ensuring even the basics of personal hygiene and cleanliness and the perceptions of abusing the public space. The dissertation also discusses the importance and role of temporary and permanent homeless accommodation structures, their mode of operation and the perceptions the homeless hold about them.
