The Archbishop of Corfu Arsenios

Abstract

This doctoral thesis entitled "The Archbishop of Corfu Arsenios" aims to contribute to the illumination of the historical personality of Arsenios of Corfu and the era in which he lived, using as a basic tool the "Synaxarion" of the saint himself, which is part of his "Asmatic Akolouthia". Simultaneously, the "Asmatic Akolouthia" itself is an important field of research, as are the preserved writings of the saint. This triptych, consisting of the "Synaxarion", the "Asmatic Akolouthia" and the body of the saint’s written work, is also very important for Byzantine Corfu, as it constitutes one of the rare sources for this era.To evaluate all this material historically, sources of the Byzantine period, "Asmatic Acolouthiae" and "Synaxaria" of other Byzantine saints, as well as any relevant scientific study for both the Byzantine and the Venetian periods, are examined and compared exhaustively.
