Farmhouses of classical and hellenistic period in Attica
Abstract
This thesis focuses on the farmhouses of the Classical and Hellenistic period in Attica. Its main aim is the multilateral study of the phenomenon of the ancient Greek farmhouse as it appeared, developed and evolved in the area of Attica during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. More specifically, the ultimate aim is to interpret the Attica farmhouse, revealing clearly its forms, roles and functions as well as the rural landscape itself, which is in turn shaped by each farmhouse. Various resources were drawn on for this dissertation, namely archaeological evidence from excavations and surface surveys carried out in Attica, as well as an extensive corpus of ancient sources, which includes ancient authors’ passages and inscriptions related to the farmhouses, the farms, the agricultural infrastructure and rural life in general.
