Stabilization exercises and transverse friction massage in chronic myofascial pain patients with clinical lumbar instability

Abstract

The purpose of this prospective, single-blind and randomized controlled study was to evaluate the duration of transverse friction massage application on active myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) combined with stabilization exercises (SE). In the research project, 36 physically active adults were included, aged 19-55 years with 1-3 active MTrPs and low back clinical instability. The participants were allocated into three treatment groups (SE, SE plus transverse friction massage-3.5 min/MTrP, SE plus transverse friction massage-90 sec/MTrP) and evaluated at baseline, immediately after an 8-week intervention period and two months afterwards. Dependent variables included disability, fear of pain, pressure pain threshold (PPT), electromyographic (EMG) activity and size of the active MTrPs, muscle thickness at rest of transversus abdominis and multifidus contraction ability, fatigue of the paraspinal muscles and dynamic stability of the painful side along with the ratio of left and right side ...
