EFFECTS OF LOW ENERGY DIET ON RAT SKULL GROWTH AND ITS SUBSEQUENT RECOVERY

Abstract

THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO STUDY ANY EFFECT OF LOW-ENERGY DIET ON RAT SKULL GROWTH AND ITS SUBSEQUENT RECOVERY. EIGHTY WISTAR RATS, TWENTY FIVE DAYS OLD WERE RANDOMLY DIVIDED INTO FOUR MAJOR GROUPS. EACH GROUP WAS SUBDIVIDED INTO TWO SUBGROUPS, THE CONTROL AND THE EXPERIMENTAL ONE. THE EXPERIMENTAL SUBGROUPS WERE FED WITH 50% LOW-ENERGY DIET FOR TEN, TWENTY, THIRTY AND FOURTY DAYS. AT THE END OF EACH PERIOD HALF OF THE EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL SUBGROUPS WERE SACRIFICED. THE REMAINED WERE FED WITH NORMAL DIET UP TO A HUNDRED DAYS OLD. TWENTY SEVEN LINEAR MEASUREMENTS TAKEN FROM THE FRONTAL AND LATERAL CEPHALOGRAMS WERE ANALYZED WITH THE ANOVA TEST. THE X-RAYS WERE TAKEN AT THE BEGINNING AT THE END OF THE LOW-ENERGY PERIOD AND AT THE END OF THE EXPERIMENT. THE MAGNITUDE OF THE GROWTH RETARDATION WAS DEPENDENT UPON THE LENGTH OF PROVISION WITH LOW-ENERGY DIET. THE CATCH-UP GROWTH WAS COMPLETE EXCEPT SOME MEASUREMENTS IN GROUP FOUR.
