The role of different types of coronaviruses and respiratory syncytial virus in respiratory tract infections in children with malignant diseases
Abstract
Cancer in childhood is uncommon, representing about 1% of all cancer cases. Patients with cancer are immunosuppressed due to humoral and cell mediated immunity disorder. Thus, increased susceptibility to bacterial, fungal and viral infections is observed. Respiratory tract infections are common in children with malignancies. The causative agents and clinical symptoms vary. In patients with cancer, these infections can be severe or have a fatal outcome, due to the co-existing immunosuppression. Coronaviruses and respiratory syncytial virus are included among respiratory pathogens that affect these children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of coronaviruses and respiratory syncytial virus in respiratory tract infections in immunocompromised children with cancer.
